Introduction

The next level of speed

There’s no doubt that a lot of us strive for speed at some point in our guitar playing career. In fact, it can be quite mystical as a concept, as it’s so impressive to watch and hear. It’s an incredible tool to have in your arsenal as a guitar player, and it’s not a tool that is unattainable for anyone, it simply requires a plan and a lot of consistency. A very important point to note, and one we dive into in this course, is that you cannot play fast without playing accurate. To quote Dion, “Accuracy comes first, then gradually improve the speed.” Whether or not you love the sound of ‘speed players’ there is no doubt that having a bit of speed at your disposal is a powerful tool in your improvisation toolbox.

Having spent hours and hours developing my technique as a younger player, listening to a lot of rock and metal, I now love being able to inject a bit of speed into my playing when needed. Not all the time, just when needed.

Dion Rushe

5 musical exercises

In this challenge course Dion has outlined 5 musical exercises that we will use to build your speed. Each exercise works on a musical phrase and we progress from 4th, to 8th to triplet 8th and finally 16th note bursts. We keep a consistent key of A minor throughout, and the phrases are not the same old pentatonic ones either! We use more quirky ideas, combined with string skipping and melodic lines to actually give you a useable, practical and fun way to build your speed. Finally, Dion sets a marker at the start of the course: 150BPM 16th notes is possible, and you can get there if you keep working and get consistent. For many of us that’s a million miles away, but having that aim can do nothing but help build your speed. Remember, even though this is all about speed, it’s not a sprint... It’s a marathon! Join Dion for this exciting adventure today!
