Introduction

The Hitmaker!

In the world of pop and funk music, Nile Rodgers is best known as the “hitmaker” (plus, his guitar is called that too!), and if you take one listen to his guitar parts you will hear why! Famed for his uniquely simple tone of a Strat plugged into a recording desk, he’s played with David Bowie, Chic, Sister Sledge, Daft Punk and so many more. Diving a little deeper, his sound is based around his incredible rhythm chops, chord vocabulary and his ability to craft perfect parts for his songs. Combining small chord voicings with wicked 16th note grooves and beautiful melody parts, he effortlessly creates some of the most memorable guitar sounds in history, and we’ll explore exactly how he does it!

Nile taught me, over and over again, that we need to play for the song, rather than playing for ourselves. So every time I approach a song for a pop artist I think, what would Nile do? If I can get close to that, I know I’m doing alright!

Triads, embellishments & groove

Over 4 fantastic units we will learn how to play like the great Nile Rodgers. We’ll start in unit 1 with triads, demonstrating how we can transform very basic chord ideas to make them far more interesting with voice leading in triads. Then we’ll use the song in unit 2 to put your new skills to the test, while developing the relationship between your left and right hands to level up your funky strumming skills. With unit 3 we’ll approach Nile’s trick bag of chord voicings, highlighting the major 7th, minor 7th and 13th chords that he uses so famously. Finally, in unit 4 we have a challenging song to finish, taking everything we’ve learnt previously, plus some adding even cooler harmony and embellishments!
