Unit 1

The Modes of Metal

In this unit we are diving into the world of modes within metal. Claire teaches all the modes you’ll need for metal riffs, both to learn and to create your own!

Unit 2

VHS

In this unit we will tackle our first song! Claire will be walking you through her very own song, VHS, written by her band Glytsh. This is a very cool modern metal track that will immediately help you apply the principles of the last unit.

Unit 3

Metal Toolbox

In this unit, whilst you’re still working with that awesome song, we’ll be diving into a massive toolbox of metal techniques, ideas and songwriting concepts to get you understanding the genre even further.

Unit 4

Savage

In our final unit we will work towards mastering this awesome track of Claire’s, which has an incredible riff and blistering solo! We’ll be applying everything we’ve learnt so far in this song, so strap in as it’s going to push your skills again.

Introduction

The next level of metal.

For our follow up Metal Essentials course, we’re taking the core skills, techniques and theory concepts from Level 1 into the world of more modern metal. Claire is the perfect host, having picked up the guitar at the age of 14 completely inspired by bands such as Metallica, RATM, Deftones & Tool. With a solid start to her musical journey, Claire then progressed into more modern bands such as In Flames, Issues & more and is now touring with her own incredible metal band, Glytsh. Claire draws from her vast knowledge of the genre to bring us a detailed guide to how you can develop in this style, and learn to write your own metal songs.

Modes, technique and tuning!

To kick off our Level 2 course we discuss and learn the “metal modes”! This dive into the world of Locrian, Phrygian and more will help us to understand how great metal riffs and lead parts are designed, and how these modes add to the darkness of the genre. In unit 2 we begin to apply this knowledge with our first track. We take a deep dive into the song theory and techniques, as well as cool elements such as polymeters and production skills. In unit 3 we discuss essential metal techniques, to fill in the gaps in your technique, to make sure you have a handle on different tunings, the writing process and more. We end the course with a final song that takes everything you have learned and gives you an opportunity to apply and learn through experience with this epic track. By the end of the course you will have all the tools you need to write your own metal tracks!
