We all know John Mayer as a great electric guitar player, but he really burst onto the pop scene as a virtuoso acoustic player. As he’s transitioned more and more to the electric in his live shows, the acoustic work has continued to develop alongside it, and remains a core part of the “John Mayer Sound”! Over the years of studying John, Thomas has taken his unique, two fingered, acoustic picking technique and assigned it to his more traditional fingerstyle technique. This allows Thomas to take the magic of what John is playing and teach it in a way that is accessible to fingerstyle students. So, how do we get those signature John Mayer sounds with literally being John Mayer? Thomas will reveal all in this fantastic, detailed and unique course.

Over 4 epic units we will break down 4 of John Mayer’s most commonly used acoustic techniques, with an example piece for each one. Unit 1 is all about learning to use the pick and open tunings to create a unique and dynamic sound. Lots is made of his fingerstyle, but he is a master with a pick too! Unit two is the sound of the train rolling into the station! Taking the slap technique and refining it into this beautiful bluesy tune. Unit 3 is John Mayer’s version of travis picking, using a unique polyrhythm idea to advance your rhythmical theory and application. Finally, unit 4 is saving the best for last, in his most well known, and most impressive fingerstyle sound. This course is challenging, but it has to be as we’re dealing with a master guitar player.
